safecontractor is a leading third party accreditation scheme which recognises very high standards in health and safety management amongst UK contractors.
Alexander Trailers is principally involved in the materials handling sector, specialising in the design and manufacture of industrial trailers and with a £1 million turnover. Alexander Trailers most recent clients have included major players such as BAE Systems, Babcock, Nestle, Nissan, QinetiQ, Toyota and John Bradshaws Ltd.
The company’s application for safecontractor accreditation was driven by the need for a uniform standard across the business.
“As a growing business, Alexander Trailers recognises the need and benefit of a standard approach towards health and safety and the safe execution of works on site.”
safecontractor accreditation will enhance the company’s ability to attract new contracts and its commitment to safety will be viewed positively by its insurers when the company liability policy is up for renewal.
safecontractor is applicable to most sectors although it is particularly relevant to food manufacture, property, facilities management, retail and leisure sectors, all of which are big users of contracted services.
John Kinge, technical director of safecontractor said, “Major organisations simply cannot afford to run the risk of employing contractors who are not able to prove that they have sound health and safety policies in place.”
“More companies need to understand the importance of adopting good risk management in the way that Alexander Trailers has done. The firm’s high standard has set an example which hopefully will be followed by other companies within the sector.
safecontractor plays a vital role in supporting our clients in meeting their compliance needs, whilst working with their contractors as they progress through the accreditation process.”
Under the safecontractor scheme, businesses undergo a vetting process which examines health and safety procedures and their track record for safe practice. Those companies meeting the high standard are included on a database, which is accessible to registered users only via a website.
Client-organisations who sign up to the scheme can access the database, enabling them to vet potential contractors before they even set foot on site. These clients agree that, as users of the scheme, they will engage only those who have received accreditation.
Over one hundred and seventy major nation-wide businesses, from several key sectors, have signed up to use the scheme when selecting contractors for services such as building, cleaning, maintenance, refurbishment or electrical and mechanical work.

Moving parts and products around a production line is a key part of the production process, and something that shouldn’t be underestimated.
Nestle Water UK Limited have recently opened a new production plant in Buxton and we have worked closely with them through their materials handling supplier to provide a solution to ensure that this can be done efficiently.
The castor steer trolleys have been designed to carry and distribute the product to point of use on the line, the trolleys are towed in multiples, disconnected and positioned adjacent to the operator.
The castor wheel selection, drawbar design, auto rear couplings, rad stop ground brake and chassis design were all key to ensure maneuverability, durability and ease of use for the operator.
The chassis was designed as a base to carry standard pallets with securing pockets to allow any configuration or load attachments, the photographs shows a shelving unit that is slot in/removable and adjustable, this allows the trolleys to be utilised to carry any load – capacity permitting!!

Babcock Marine and Technology Division, in Roysth ship yard, have recently received 11 new trailers to support their manufacturing and construction project.
The trailers were all specifically designed with the customer to support different aspects of their process, the photographs are of the 50,000 kgs trailers that were designed and manufactured to store and transport counter balance weights for their new mobile cranes. They have slot in/removable stanchions to aid this, the trailers were 6000mm x 2500mm air braked with oscillating axles, a drawbar leveller and individually tested lashing rings around the perimeter.
As can be seen from the pictures this is one of our larger trailers!!

Last month Kone Cranes received 2 new trailers for one of their customers, the trailers are designed to store a 7,500kgs grab arm attachment within a recycling centre. The trailers will allow easy storage and then transportation of the load, as can be seen from the pictures it’s not an easy load to move!!!
The trailer has a capacity of 10,000kgs and has 2 cylindrical plates to the deck of the trailer with lashing points to secure the load. It is a single turntable trailer with press on band solid rubber tyres and a hand parking brake. This trailer is unusual as it is 3800mm wide which makes transport on the Highway very interesting. It also has a 3 coat paint specification to protect against the harsh environment in which they will be working.
